Deputy Area Health and Safety Manager


Base of Operations: Baghdad, Iraq


Position responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the development of a regional health and safety program which meets the provisions of the Operations Action Plan (OAP), industry standards, and/or Government specifications to ensure that Operations and Maintenance services are performed in a hazard free environment.
  • Manage a health and safety program with diverse but recognized hazards in constructing and operating power plants, achieving compliance with Army Corps Safety manual provisions and effectively communicating multiple health and safety practices and procedures to staff and line personnel.
  • Develop educational material and techniques. Promote a wide variety of training activities designed to achieve awareness of safety hazards and corresponding preventive procedures in prime power and high voltage hazard environment.
  • Plan, organize, direct, budget, coordinate and evaluate a fully developed health and safety program including tag-out/lock-out procedures and advise key managerial and executive personnel on courses of action affecting facility operations, work processes, human-machine relationships and environmental conditions which impact on the safety and efficiency of personnel.
  • Carry out the following:
    • Interface with area management, site management, and corporate headquarters;
    • Inspecting – observing environmental conditions and employee performance patterns to identify electrical and other hazards, detect risks, and determine causal relationships; developing abatement recommendations for health and safety hazards;
    • Investigating – searching for clues, studying variables, questioning witnesses, and retracing sequences to uncover the sources of reported injuries and illnesses;
    • Recording – assuring the validity of data collected, accurate documentation of occurrences and data summaries, and maintenance of program information;
    • Analyzing – examination of available data to identify possible sources of losses experienced, determining critical factors prior to occurrence, and recommendation of alternative adjustments to eliminate or minimize losses from injuries and illnesses;
    • Reporting – defining terminology, writing summaries and preparing summary documentation related to health and safety.
  • Provide daily, weekly, and monthly reports to maintain close relationships with Military prime power group to ensure all their requirements are fully met in accordance with the task order and prime contract requirements.
  • Continually review and develop incoming and potential projects with regard to health and safety practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Candidate requirements:

  • At least twenty (20) years experience with a good safety record is required.
  • Experience with all phases of Prime Power projects preferred. Construction and/or electrical background is preferred.
  • Extended travel will be required to Iraq and Afghanistan and other remote areas.
  • Must be able to successfully pass physical and dental examinations prior to deploying to duty station.
  • Proactive nature and strong interpersonal skills in collaborating, communicating and working with Senior field officers, local and international subcontractors, Army Corps of Engineers as well as the home office/corporate management team.
  • Experience in Afghanistan and Iraq is preferred.

Physical demands:

Work conditions may be physically demanding, requiring candidate to undergo medical and dental assessment before hire. This includes a complete physical examination, dental examination, and any/all requisite immunizations particular for Iraq and/or Afghanistan. For candidates who have not worked/lived in Iraq prior to hire, a one week long pre-deployment training will be required.

Work environment

The work environment and living conditions in Iraq may be harsh. This includes the potential for hostile encounters. Position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment. Medical facilities for routine medical and dental care will be available through the Military.

Duration of assignment:

Long-term/1 calendar year (with possibility of extension)
