High Voltage Electrician
Position responsibilities:
- Operate and maintain high voltage distribution network and power plant equipment;
- Train electrical teams and line crews to perform routine installation maintenance, and repairs on electric power control equipment, distribution lines, or electric-generating equipment;
- Assure high voltage safety criteria are met to prevent injury to life and limb;
- Work as part of electrical teams or line crews to perform routine installation maintenance, and repairs on electric power control equipment, distribution lines, or electric-generating equipment:
- Work on power cables, transformers, insulators, and control equipment such as switches, circuit breakers, and panels. This includes collecting transformer oil samples that are tested for contamination as well as cleaning up contaminated sites;
- Install and connect transformers on hangers and platforms, making hot taps and splices;
- Install underground cable, conduit, and ductwork. Install transformers; string lights and power wires on cross arms and through ducts and manholes; make electrical connections; and splice cables;
- Erect and replace poles; perform rigging on high voltage motors, transformers, and compressors;
- Use and maintain various hand and power tools of the trade;
- May operate aerial trucks and associated equipment.
- Report the location of failure, cause, repairs needed, and assure that circuits are open and tagged before work is started;
- Execute the company’s policy and procedure for proper and efficient operation of the power plants and distribution network in Iraq;
- Abide by and adhere to all requirements in General Order #1 in conformity with US military standards and practices.
Essential qualifications:
- Experience in installing and maintaining medium to high voltage electrical distribution networks;
- Familiarity with high voltage electrical components and knowledge of wiring and where and how controls are installed and operated;
- Experience working in international work environments as an expatriate or US military status;
- Proactive nature and strong interpersonal skills in collaborating, communicating and working with (1) other senior Berger/Cummins managers and staff (to include Home Office management team), (2) Local and International subcontractors; (3) Army Corps of Engineers military representatives; and (4) local officials as required.
Desirable qualifications:
- Senior-level and/or Class A experience working in switchgear operations, substations and installation/maintenance of high voltage distribution networks;
- Previous experience in the Power Generation industry;
- Extensive hot glove and bucket truck experience;
- Experience with maintenance and construction of OH/UG distribution systems, repairing of cross arms, insulators, distribution transformers, regulators, circuit breakers and cables;
- Experience in fault finding and rectification of Underground and Overhead Distribution Networks, up to 69kv;
- Highly proficient in analyzing and interpreting schematics, proficient in troubleshooting.
Candidate requirements:
- At least five (5) years experience working with Synchronized Diesel Power Generators;
- At least five (5) years experience working with live High Voltage networks;
- At least ten (10) years experience with a good safety record;
- Experience with all phases of Prime Power projects preferred;
- Construction and/or electrical background is preferred;
- Extended travel will be required to Iraq and Afghanistan and other remote areas;
- Must be able to successfully pass physical and dental examinations prior to deploying to duty station;
- Proactive nature and strong interpersonal skills in collaborating, communicating and working with Senior field officers, local and international subcontractors, Army Corps of Engineers as well as the home office/corporate management team;
- Previous experience in Iraq is preferred.
Physical demands:
Work conditions may be physically demanding, requiring candidate to undergo medical and dental assessment before hire. This includes a complete physical examination, dental examination, and any/all requisite immunizations particular for Iraq and/or Afghanistan. For candidates who have not worked/lived in Iraq prior to hire, a one week long pre-deployment training will be required.
Work environment
The work environment and living conditions in Iraq may be harsh. This includes the potential for hostile encounters. Position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment. Medical facilities for routine medical and dental care will be available through the Military.
Duration of assignment:
Long-term/1 calendar year (with possibility of extension)
