Diesel Mechanic


Position responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot and overhaul, rebuild, or make comparable major repairs to Gensets, powered support systems, including the major components (e.g., engines, generators, alternators, gears, compressors, and hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical components) of the following:
    • Power plant generation equipment,
    • Standard diesel power generators
    • Transformers,
    • Switchgears,
    • Emergency power supply units,
    • HVAC units,
    • And other combat support powered systems.
  • Report all special occurrences such as emergency outages and corrective actions taken to maintain service. Anticipate unscheduled load changes and detect early indications of equipment malfunctions in order to maintain continuous service;
  • Assist in the control and distribution of the mechanical and electrical makeup and operation of powered support systems such as those described above, including their major mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components;
  • Troubleshoot and repair diesel, gasoline, and/or multi-fuel engines (e.g., overhauling those of 3 to 8 cylinders and up to 3MW of power or making less extensive repairs to larger, more complex engines);
  • Gear and govern components for controlling, changing, or transferring speed and power;
  • Assist in maintaining electrical power through the power plant and primary distribution system, and in the operation of the central switchboard to actuate remotely controlled circuit breakers, transformers, and switches in order to regulate and maintain proper voltage on the distribution lines;
  • When malfunctions occur, assist the senior mechanic to isolate and bypass the fault in order to maintain service or take actions to shed low priority loads when full service cannot be maintained;
  • Execute the company’s policy and procedure for proper and efficient operation of the power plants in Iraq;
  • As directed by the senior mechanic/supervisor.

Specific duties and responsibilities:

  • Monitor the distribution of electric power to various distribution points;
  • Operate switchboard controls to adjust remotely controlled circuit breakers, transformers, and switches to regulate and maintain proper voltage on the distribution lines and at the power generation plant;
  • Report abnormal operating conditions and reroute power through alternate feeders to user areas in case of emergency cutouts or extensive scheduled repair;
  • Notify repair crews of the location of failure and assure that circuits are open and tagged before work is started;
  • Keep an hourly log of meter readings and records shutdowns, connection and disconnection of circuits, and similar occurrences;
  • Abide by and adhere to all requirements in General Order #1 in conformity with US military standards and practices.

Essential qualifications:

  • Experience in medium to large scale O&M prime power diesel gensets;
  • Experienced in working with other technical staff;
  • Ability to read and use technical manuals, illustrations, diagrams, schematics, and similar guides covering the complete assembly, troubleshooting, and layout of powered support systems;
  • Experienced working in international environments with expatriate or US military;
  • A thorough knowledge of the mechanical and electrical makeup and operation of powered support systems such as those described above, including their major mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components including:
    • Standard Diesel generators
    • Controls
    • Switchgear

Candidate requirements:

  • At least three (3) years experience with a good safety record is required.
  • Experience with all phases of Prime Power projects is preferred. Construction and/or electrical background is preferred.
  • Extended travel to Iraq and Afghanistan and other remote areas will be required.
  • Must be able to successfully pass physical and dental examinations prior to deploying to duty station.
  • Proactive nature and strong interpersonal skills in collaborating, communicating and working with senior field officers, local and international subcontractors, the Army Corps of Engineers, as well as the home office/corporate management team.
  • Experience in Afghanistan and Iraq is preferred.

Physical demands:

Work conditions may be physically demanding, requiring candidate to undergo medical and dental assessment before hire. This includes a complete physical examination, dental examination, and any/all requisite immunizations particular for Iraq and/or Afghanistan. For candidates who have not worked/lived in Iraq prior to hire, a one week long pre-deployment training will be required.

Work environment

The work environment and living conditions in Iraq may be harsh. This includes the potential for hostile encounters. Position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment. Medical facilities for routine medical and dental care will be available through the Military.

Duration of assignment:

Long-term/1 calendar year (with possibility of extension)
